The Nuppeppou is one of the stranger entries in the catalogue of Japanese yokai — a squat, lumpen creature whose body appears to be little more than an oversized, featureless mass of folded skin, inexplicably sporting a pair of stubby arms and determined little legs. It carries no weapon and wears no armour. It doesn't need to. There is something deeply unsettling about a creature that simply exists in a way that defies easy categorisation — not quite a demon, not quite undead, just deeply, profoundly wrong. This sculpt captures that disquiet brilliantly: the half-formed features pressed into its doughy torso, the raised fist almost comically small, the textured base suggesting it has wandered in from somewhere it absolutely shouldn't have been.
Whether you're drawing on Asian mythology for a homebrew setting, populating a city's cursed underbelly with strange wanderers, or simply want a creature on your shelf that will make visitors ask questions, the Nuppeppou delivers something genuinely distinct. It works equally well as a bizarre encounter monster or as a conversation piece in a display collection — and it paints up beautifully once you start picking out those skin-fold details.
Perfect for adventurers who:
- Run campaigns drawing on Japanese folklore or Eastern mythology
- Want a monster that unnerves players without being another skeleton or zombie
- Are building urban or supernatural encounters with a folk horror edge
- Paint miniatures and love a creature with unusual texture work to bring out
- Collect display pieces that provoke genuine curiosity
Encounter Hook:
The night market of Kashen's Crossing has always had odd vendors — but the one in the far corner has been there for three nights running, selling nothing, saying nothing, and slowly turning to face each new visitor in turn. The party's rogue is the first to notice it has no stall. No goods. Just a body like a sack of wet clay, and a face that shouldn't be there at all.
Details
Supplied at 32mm scale on a detailed scenic base featuring a scaled-texture ground and small spines or fins rising from the surface. The model comes as a single piece attached to its base — ready for priming, painting, or use straight from the box.
