The Will-o'-Wisp is one of the most quietly unsettling creatures in the monster manual. No claws, no roar, no dramatic entrance — just a bobbing sphere of pale luminescence that leads the curious, the lost, and the overconfident deeper into places they should never have gone. In D&D 5e it is an Undead spirit (despite its Fey associations in folklore), feeding on the life force of dying creatures and haunting bogs, ruins, and haunted forests wherever despair lingers.
This sculpt by MZ4250 captures that eerie, deceptively simple silhouette — a glowing orb trailing ghostly tendrils above a round base. It is small, strange, and immediately evocative on the tabletop. Whether you paint it in spectral blues and greens or leave it as a ghostly grey, it will unsettle your players the moment it appears on the mat. A worthy addition to any DM's monster collection or a display piece for lovers of the stranger corners of fantasy.
Perfect for adventurers who:
- Run swamp, bog, or haunted forest encounters
- Need a subtle, atmospheric threat that doesn't look like a threat
- Are building a Feywild or gothic horror campaign
- Collect display miniatures from across the monster manual
- Want a painting project with satisfying OSL (object source lighting) potential
Encounter Hook:
The party has been following the light for twenty minutes, certain it is a lantern from the village ahead. The ground beneath their feet is no longer solid. The light has split into three. None of them lead back the way they came.
Details
Supplied at 32mm scale, cast as a single piece attached to its base and ready for priming and painting — or use it straight from the box for your next session. As with all hand-finished miniatures, minor surface marks may occasionally be present; these are easily addressed with light sanding before priming.
