Watchman 09 by Novaminis

He's walked these cobblestones for twenty years, and there isn't a pickpocket, cut-throat, or back-alley schemer in the city who doesn't know his face.

Watchman 09 is a broad-shouldered, weathered city guard mid-stride — the kind of man who's seen enough trouble that he no longer looks surprised by it. He wears a riveted studded leather breastplate with pauldrons, a long travelling cloak swept back behind him, and a battered kettle helm with a wide, practical brim. His expression is gruff and watchful beneath a thick beard, and he carries a short sword in his leading hand with the casual ease of someone who's used it before. His other hand hangs open, ready.

This is variation 09 in Novaminis' Watchman series, and this pose in particular captures the mid-patrol energy of a guard who's spotted something that doesn't quite sit right — not alarmed, not drawn up for battle, but moving with purpose. The level of detail on the armour's riveted panels, the cloak's fabric folds, and the boots' construction make this a genuinely rewarding mini to paint.

Whether you need a recurring NPC the players have to charm their way past, a corrupt sergeant who takes a cut of the docks trade, or a loyal Watch veteran who becomes an unlikely ally — Watchman 09 fills all of those roles without a repaint.

A great pick for adventurers who:

• Run urban campaigns with active city watch presence
• Need varied NPC guards beyond the generic helmet-and-halberd type
• Want a characterful human warrior figure for Waterdeep, Baldur's Gate, or any homebrew city
• Are building a watch patrol encounter group (the rest of the series pairs directly)
• Enjoy painting realistic human figures with interesting textile and armour detail

Encounter Hook: The party's fence hasn't shown up at the drop point — and when they head to his usual haunt, they find Watchman Grael already there, short sword out, turning the room over with methodical calm. He looks up when they walk in. "Funny," he says. "He was expecting you too."
