The Wasp Hive Golem is a large-scale monstrosity that sits at the intersection of the constructed and the horrifyingly organic. Its broad, segmented torso is riddled with hollow chambers and protruding spines, while a massive serrated claw extends from one arm — built for rending armour and splitting shields. Tattered, bone-framed wings spread wide at its back, each membrane stretched between wickedly curved spurs of chitin, suggesting the creature could launch itself skyward at a moment's notice. Raised fore-limbs end in hooked claws poised to strike, and the whole silhouette reads as something assembled from the remnants of a vast insect colony, animated by something far older and far worse than simple magic.
The sculpt rewards painters who enjoy layered, textured surfaces. The carapace offers deep recesses for washes and dry-brushing, while the wing membranes are thin enough to take glazes beautifully — try translucent yellows or sickly greens to suggest a bioluminescent hive-light from within. On a 51mm base, this miniature commands genuine table presence as a Large creature encounter piece.
This miniature suits adventurers who want to:
- Field a truly unsettling large-creature encounter with strong visual identity
- Add a constructed-but-organic horror to an Abyssal or Underdark campaign
- Create a centrepiece monster for a hive-themed dungeon or planar incursion arc
- Challenge their painting skills with layered chitin, membrane wings, and hollow chambers
- Build out a swarm-themed warband alongside smaller insectoid minions
Encounter Hook
The party has been tracking a series of disappearances along the trade road — merchants, pilgrims, a whole patrol of soldiers. At last they find the source: a disused grain silo converted into a towering hive structure, its walls plastered with something organic and faintly luminous. The Wasp Hive Golem drops from the ceiling the moment they step inside, claw raised, wings already spreading. The hive doesn't negotiate. It harvests.
