The Wandering Toad Yokai is one of those creatures that stops a table dead in its tracks. Part spirit, part omen, entirely unsettling — this massive toad carries a woven basket on its warty back, within which a pale human arm reaches over the rim, and a long-haired woman shelters beneath the creature's vast bulk, pressed against its side in a posture that blurs the line between captive, companion, and something far stranger. Water lilies dot the mossy base, grounding the scene in the murky margins of a forgotten marsh. Whether this is a fey spirit, a cursed deity, or a predator with very particular tastes, that's for your DM to decide — and your table to dread.
In Japanese folklore, kaisha and mononoke of the wetlands carry the weight of entire villages' worth of secrets. This yokai wears that tradition well. As a tabletop piece it occupies large-creature scale and makes a striking centrepiece, whether on the battlefield or on a display shelf between sessions. The detail across the toad's textured hide, the trailing hair of the sheltering figure, and the woven basket weave give painters a genuinely rewarding miniature to work with.
Perfect for adventurers who:
- Run campaigns with a folklore, mythic, or Oriental Adventures flavour
- Need a memorable large-creature encounter in a swamp, river delta, or cursed wetland
- Want an NPC with genuine ambiguity — is it a threat, a guide, or something in between?
- Collect display pieces with narrative depth and intricate sculpt work
Encounter Hook:
The village elder swears old Hama-Guro only takes the willing — but the party has now found three sets of muddy footprints leading into the reed marsh, and none leading out. Whatever is collecting travellers in that woven basket, it stopped in the village square last night. Someone left an offering. The basket was empty by morning.
