Vivienne Shadowmere is the kind of NPC that changes a campaign. Seated on an ornate chaise longue carved with skull-footed legs and baroque scrollwork, she is draped in layered pearl strands, her face half-hidden behind an elaborate masquerade mask crowned with sweeping feathers. Two serpents wind around her arms — one at each hand — suggesting a Warlock's pact, a yuan-ti bloodline, or simply the sort of person who keeps snakes because they can. Her posture is entirely, deliberately relaxed: legs crossed, chin slightly raised, one hand raised to display whatever she's just taken from whoever was foolish enough to bring it to her.
This is a character who runs a city from a drawing room. Sculpted with extraordinary detail — quilted upholstery, pearl ankle straps, a miniature creature perched in her raised hand — she works equally as a crime lord, a Warlock patron made flesh, a guild mistress, or the most dangerous face at the masquerade. Just as compelling on a painted display shelf as she is at the centre of a social encounter gone terribly, elegantly wrong.
Perfect for adventurers who:
- Need a memorable, visually distinctive villain or crime lord NPC
- Are running a intrigue-heavy urban or Ravenloft-style campaign
- Want a Warlock patron or serpent-cult figure with serious table presence
- Are looking for a showpiece display miniature with exceptional sculptural detail
- Play yuan-ti, noble sorcerers, or masked socialite player characters
Encounter Hook:
The party has been summoned — not invited, summoned — to the private salon of Vivienne Shadowmere, whose twin serpents have already tasted the air around each of them. She knows about the missing shipment. She knows about the contact they lost last week. She hasn't decided yet whether the adventurers are useful or simply entertaining, and she holds a small carved figure between two fingers — one that looks uncomfortably like the party's Rogue — as she begins to speak.
