The Vargouille is one of the more unsettling denizens of the Lower Planes — a severed head given grotesque life, sprouting bat-like wings and a writhing mass of tentacles where a throat should be. In D&D lore, these creatures haunt the depths of the Abyss and the most corrupted corners of the Material Plane, and their signature shriek can paralyse even seasoned adventurers. This sculpt from La Louve 3D captures that horror beautifully: the bloated, warty skull, the wide leathery wings stretched mid-flight, and the curling tentacles beneath the jaw are all present and full of character. It reads as immediately threatening on the tabletop — exactly as it should.
Whether you're deploying a swarm of them as an encounter encounter in an Underdark shrine or using a single specimen as a summoned horror in a warlock's bargain gone wrong, this miniature carries the presence the creature demands. Painters will find plenty of surface detail to work with — the textured wing membranes, the knobbly skull surface, and the organic tentacle mass all reward careful layering and washes. As a display piece, it makes for a genuinely eye-catching addition to any fiend or demon collection.
Perfect for adventurers who:
- Run horror-tinged D&D 5e encounters in cursed temples, the Underdark, or abyssal rifts
- Need a flying fiend mini that reads clearly and dramatically at the tabletop
- Enjoy painting creatures with rich organic texture — scales, membranes, and tentacles
- Collect demon and fiend miniatures for display alongside their adventuring party
- Want a Warlock Familiar or summoned monster with genuine menace on the table
Encounter Hook:
The party descends into the flooded undercroft of the Sunken Basilica to recover the stolen reliquary — only to find the cultists already dead, their faces frozen mid-scream. From somewhere above in the vaulted darkness, the sound of slow, leathery wingbeats begins to fill the chamber.
Details
Printed at 32mm scale. The model and base (if a base option is selected) are supplied as separate pieces and can be attached with a small amount of glue. Please note that some models are sculpted to interact with their decorative base, so it is worth considering the base option for the best final presentation. As with all hand-finished resin work, minor imperfections can occasionally occur — any small marks or support remnants are easily tidied up before priming.
