Description

It stands at the threshold of every dark corridor — not a guardian, but a warning, sealed in bone chains and shadow until something foolish enough approaches.

  • ✔ 32mm scale resin miniature, printed fresh to order in the UK
  • ✔ Supplied unpainted and ready to prime
  • ✔ Compatible with D&D, Pathfinder, and all tabletop RPGs
  • ✔ Equally at home on the gaming table or the display shelf

The Umbral Keeper Rook is one of the most characterful pieces in Great Grimoire's dark chess-inspired range. This listing includes two distinct states of the same piece: the sealed form — a tall, spike-studded ovoid bearing a snarling demonic face, etched with runic scrollwork across its ornate pedestal base — and the unleashed form, where the shell has cracked open to reveal a robed, skeletal figure wreathed in bone chains, flanked by curved bladed petals and surrounded by jagged spines. The contrast between the two states tells a story all on its own, making this a genuinely versatile prop for any Dungeon Master.

Whether you use it as a rook in a cursed chess set, a bound infernal construct guarding a lich's sanctum, or a demonic artifact that your party really shouldn't have touched — the Umbral Keeper earns its place at the table and on the display shelf in equal measure. Both states sit on the same ornate cross-footed pedestal, richly detailed with filigree and arcane markings that reward a careful painter's eye.

Well-suited for adventurers who:

  • Run D&D 5e or TTRPG encounters featuring fiends, constructs, or bound infernal entities
  • Want a dual-state monster prop to represent a creature shifting between dormant and active modes
  • Are building a dark fantasy or infernal-themed chess set
  • Enjoy display painting with complex textures — bone chains, rune-etched surfaces, and layered detail throughout
  • Need a boss encounter piece or cursed artefact for a dungeon delve

Encounter Hook:
The party enters the inner sanctum of a fallen paladin's tower to find twelve pedestals arranged in two rows — eleven hold sealed Umbral Keepers, chains intact. The twelfth pedestal is empty. As the rogue steps forward to examine the nearest sealed form, the bone chains begin, slowly, to unwind.
