The Treachery of Whales bust is one of the most unsettling pieces in the Witchsong Miniatures catalogue, and that is very much a compliment. What you're looking at is a grotesque, ceremonially significant head — part deep-sea horror, part ritual artefact made flesh. The sculpt is dominated by concentric spiral eyes, tribal engravings etched across the brow and cheeks, and a lolling tongue that hangs slack between cracked teeth. The right side of the face has partially given way to something else entirely — a hollow socket with a fleshy orb rolling within it, surrounded by rotting, barnacled texture. A single horn erupts from the crown, and the whole piece sits on a cracked stone plinth that looks like it was dragged up from a sunken temple.
Details
This is a bust in the truest sense — a showcase piece for painters who want a challenging, layered subject, and for collectors who want something that commands a shelf. The texture variety alone — smooth ritual carvings against pustulent flesh against cracked stone — gives painters an extraordinary range of techniques to explore in a single piece. It also works brilliantly as visual inspiration for a campaign: a recovered idol, a drowned god's visage, or simply the face your players describe to the archmage when they say "it was unlike anything we'd seen."
Well-suited for adventurers who:
- Paint display busts and want a subject rich in competing textures and character
- Collect fantasy horror miniatures or deep-sea creature sculpts
- Run aquatic, Lovecraftian, or dark nautical TTRPG campaigns and need visual props or inspiration
- Want a centrepiece model that holds its own on a shelf or gaming table
Encounter Hook:
The party retrieves a carved stone head from the wreck of the Saltborn Covenant — a vessel lost forty years ago on a route no one will name. The idol is cold despite the warm water, and the harbormaster who first touches it begins dreaming in a language that predates written record. Something is already on its way up.
Supplied as a display bust at collector scale, mounted on a detailed cracked-stone plinth base. Printed to a high level of detail with supports removed. Minor marks from the printing process can occasionally occur and are easily tidied up prior to painting.

The cats rolled Arcana to understand why humans spend so much time on tiny figures. They failed the check. They stayed anyway.
