The Caterpillar Broodmother is one of those miniatures that stops a table dead. Perched atop a tiered mushroom throne — its cap wide and warped, its stalk dripping with smaller fungi and hanging larval sacs — she coils with predatory patience, her segmented body thick with years of feeding. Two short antennae crown a face that is all gnashing teeth and hollow, unsettling eyes, and her fore-claws are raised mid-reach, as though whatever interrupted her was unwise to do so.

What makes this sculpt particularly striking is the detail layered throughout the base. Clusters of mushrooms of varying sizes crowd the ground around her throne, some with textured caps, others with that wet, brain-like surface that immediately reads as wrong. Nestled on the broad cap beside her are three larvae — smaller versions of the Broodmother herself, each with that same unsettling face, clinging in place and waiting. The composition tells a complete story before a single die has been rolled.

Great Grimoire has given the surface detail of the Broodmother herself real care: the segmented folds of her body have weight and depth, the texture shifts between smooth underbelly and rougher flanks, and the claws read cleanly at tabletop distance. This is a miniature that rewards patient painters — washes and layering will bring out every fold and fungal crevice — but it will also read well with a quick basecoat and drybrush for those who need something on the table by Saturday.

Encounter Hook

The party has been tracking a trail of desiccated husks through the forest — animals, then a shepherd, then two militia scouts — each one hollowed out and wrapped in silken fibres. The trail ends in a clearing dominated by a vast mushroom cluster that wasn't on any map. As they push through the outermost ring of fungi, the Broodmother rises from her throne, larvae shifting restlessly at her sides, and a low chittering sound rises from somewhere beneath the ground. Whatever she's been laying has already hatched — and it's been waiting.
