Crawling Claws are among the most unsettling of undead creatures — not for their raw power, but for the sheer wrongness of them. Animated by foul necromancy, these severed hands skitter and grasp with a dreadful sense of purpose, and Atlanticus Arts has captured that grotesque energy in a single compelling sculpt. A mass of bloated, clawed fingers erupts from a rubble-strewn base, bones and skulls half-buried beneath the tide of reaching limbs. The surface detail is exceptional — every knuckle swollen, every talon yellowed and cracked, the flesh textured with the particular decay of something that should not be moving but very much is.
As a painting project, this sculpt rewards both speed-painters and detail obsessives. A zenithal prime followed by muted flesh tones and a heavy wash will bring the necrotic texture to life almost immediately, whilst adventurers who want to push it further will find no shortage of surface interest — the layered fingers, the rocky scatter base, and the scattered skull fragments all offer distinct focal points. A pop of sickly green or bioluminescent blue on the claw tips can make the swarm feel genuinely threatening on the table.
This sculpt is also available in a 75mm variant for adventurers who want a larger, more centrepiece-worthy version of the swarm — beautifully detailed at either scale.
Well suited to adventurers who:
- Run necromancer-heavy campaigns or dungeon crawls thick with undead encounters
- Want a tactile, evocative marker for a Swarm of Crawling Claws encounter straight from the Monster Manual
- Are looking for a distinctive display piece that sits outside the standard humanoid silhouette
- Enjoy painting organic textures — decayed flesh, cracked bone, and sculpted stone rubble
Encounter Hook: The party has been hired to retrieve a stolen spellbook from a necromancer's tower. They locate it on a reading stand in the lower vault — but as the rogue reaches for it, the shadows beneath every shelf begin to twitch. The necromancer left his Crawling Claws as guardians, and they have been waiting in the dark for exactly this moment. The swarm erupts from the floor, cutting off the exit and swarming the party's lowest-armoured members first.
