The Stone Cursed is one of the more unsettling entries in the D&D 5e monster roster — not a beast, not a construct, but something in between. Once a living person, now caught in an agonising half-state of petrification, their body slowly hardening into something ancient and wrong. This sculpt by Monster Atlas captures that horror with real specificity: the hunched, lurching gait of a figure that can barely control its own limbs, the clawed and misshapen hands stretched wide, and a face locked in an expression somewhere between aggression and despair. The tattered coat and belted tunic speak to a life before the curse — a merchant, a traveller, a guard perhaps — now reduced to a shambling threat in the dark.
At 32mm scale, the detail holds up beautifully whether you're placing it across the battlemat from your players or displaying it on a shelf. The pose — one arm raised and grasping, the other hanging at an unnatural angle — gives the mini genuine menace on the table and real character as a display piece.
Well suited for adventurers who:
- Run dungeon crawls or cursed-ruin encounters in D&D 5e or other TTRPGs
- Want a monster with lore weight and visual storytelling built into the sculpt
- Are building a collection of humanoid-adjacent horrors for a horror-tinged campaign
- Enjoy painting miniatures with a narrative challenge — this one rewards a pallid, desaturated palette with flecks of grey stone creeping in at the extremities
Encounter Hook:
The party is hired to find a missing cartographer last seen surveying the ruins east of the valley. They find his journal first — the entries grow shorter, more erratic, until the final page bears only a single sentence in a handwriting that seems to have been pressed into the paper rather than written on it. Then they hear the footsteps. Slow. Heavy. Getting closer.
Details
This miniature is supplied at 32mm scale. The model and base are separate pieces and can be attached with superglue — the sculpt is designed to work with its decorative base, so we'd recommend using it. Ready for priming and painting straight away, or display it as-is in grey resin. Minor imperfections from the printing process are possible and any small marks are easily tidied up before painting.
