Description

The chest was too heavy to be empty, and too still to be safe — and then the lid burst open.

  • ✔ Supplied unpainted and ready to prime
  • ✔ Compatible with D&D, Pathfinder, and all tabletop RPGs
  • ✔ Equally at home on the gaming table or the display shelf

Few dungeon encounters stop a party in their tracks quite like a beholder-kin, and the Spectator Tyrant does exactly that — with dramatic flair to spare. This sculpt depicts a bloated, spike-encrusted aberration bursting free from a wooden treasure chest, tentacles coiling around the sides as its enormous central eye and rows of serrated teeth snap toward anything foolish enough to investigate. The warty, pustule-dotted body is ringed with bony spines, the tentacles end in bulbous, sucker-lined tips, and the sheer mass of the creature makes it clear this is no mere guardian — it is the treasure, and it has been waiting.

The integrated scenic base captures a dungeon-floor moment frozen in time: shattered stone fragments scatter around the base of the chest, suggesting the creature has already begun to spill out of whatever corner it was crammed into. Painted, this miniature would reward dark, visceral skin tones — sickly greens, bruised purples, or a glossy black-and-amber eye would all read immediately as something deeply, cosmically wrong. As a display piece, the drama of the erupting chest composition gives it genuine shelf presence alongside your other aberrations.

Great for adventurers who:

  • Want a mimic-adjacent trap encounter that genuinely surprises their players
  • Need a visually arresting aberration for an Underdark delve or mad wizard's vault
  • Love painting intricate skin textures — bumps, warty protrusions, and layered scales all at once
  • Are building a beholder-kin encounter group or a gallery of iconic D&D monsters
  • Want a display centrepiece that tells its own story straight off the shelf

Encounter Hook: The party has been hired to retrieve a stolen reliquary from an abandoned thieves' guild vault. The chest matching the description sits in the centre of the final chamber — perfectly positioned, perfectly intact, and faintly damp. As the rogue reaches for the latch, three of the party's Passive Perceptions fail them. The Spectator Tyrant has been watching through the keyhole for hours.
