This is the Skeleton Leader Magic — a commanding undead warlord-mage sculpted with the authority of a monarch who refused to stay buried. He wears a jagged iron crown atop a grinning skull, draped in flowing robes and layered armour that still speak to his living station. In one hand he raises a long, spiralling staff topped with an orb of necrotic energy; in the other he clutches an open tome crawling with skulls along its spine — a grimoire that likely contains the very rituals that bound him to unlife.

The detail across this sculpt rewards careful painting. The armour retains the proud geometry of a ruler's plate — pauldrons, greaves, and chain beneath a sweeping draped cloak — while the skeletal form beneath gives it all a gaunt, hollow weight. Skull motifs appear at his belt clasp and across the tome, tying the iconography together without becoming repetitive. The staff in particular has excellent surface texture that will respond beautifully to drybrushing or ink washes.

Whether you're running him as a lich-adjacent BBEG, the tactical commander of a shambling undead warband, or a powerful undead wizard the party must negotiate with rather than simply fight, the Skeleton Leader Magic brings gravitas to your encounter.

Works especially well for adventurers who:

  • Need a centrepiece villain for a necromancy-heavy campaign arc
  • Want a commanding figure to lead skeleton or zombie encounter groups
  • Are building out a Ravenloft, Shadowfell, or crypt-based dungeon
  • Enjoy showcase painting projects with strong silhouettes and layered detail
  • Are looking for a powerful undead spellcaster NPC with genuine presence

Encounter Hook: The party enters the burial vault beneath the ruined citadel to find the Skeleton King standing motionless at the altar — until one of them steps on the cracked seal. He turns slowly, opens the grimoire with a skeletal hand, and begins to read aloud. The words don't summon creatures. They rewrite the names inscribed in the party's death records — and he's already started on the first character.
