This is no shambling foot soldier — the Skeleton Leader Commanding is a warlord of the undead, sculpted with the authority and poise of a ruler who never truly gave up his crown. He stands in a wide, commanding stance, one skeletal hand raised with a pointed, imperious gesture while the other grips a long, elegantly proportioned longsword low at his side. The message is unmistakable: he is directing something terrible, and it is almost certainly heading your way.
The armour is layered and deliberate — pauldrons, vambraces, greaves and knee guards worked with clean, angular detail, beneath which chainmail drapes over the torso. A full-length cape sweeps behind him, adding real drama to the silhouette from every angle. His belt buckle bears skull motifs, reinforcing the necromantic authority of the sculpt without tipping into parody. Above it all, a spiked crown crowns a bare, grinning skull — equal parts king and monster.
As a painting project, this sculpt rewards patience. The cape offers broad, smooth planes for gradient work, while the layered armour panels provide crisp edges for drybrushing and lining. The crown and skull face are natural focal points — a spot of OSL or verdigris on the crown spikes would elevate the whole piece. Base him on a cracked flagstone or mausoleum tile and he becomes an immediate table centrepiece.
Adventurers who love this miniature tend to be:
- Dungeon Masters running undead armies, lichdom arcs, or gothic horror campaigns
- Painters who enjoy a character with clear focal hierarchy and dramatic silhouette
- Display collectors building curated undead or villain galleries
- Anyone who needs a mid-tier undead commander that reads as a genuine threat on the table
Encounter Hook: The party descends into the mausoleum of a long-dead warlord-king, expecting little more than restless ghouls — only to find him still seated on his crumbling throne, crown intact, blade drawn, and very much aware that someone just opened his door. He does not speak. He simply points.
