Not every skeleton shambles out of the crypt in rotting rags. This one stood a shield wall once, answered to a warlord, and earned that horned helmet through decades of brutal service — and death has done nothing to diminish the discipline. The Skeleton Army Sword & Shield miniature from Epic Miniatures is a heavy infantry skeleton that means business: full plate-style armour decorated with sweeping engravings, a broad round shield carried with practiced confidence, and a longsword raised at an angle that reads less like shambling undead and more like a soldier waiting for the order to advance.

The sculpt rewards painters who enjoy contrast work — the ornate chest piece, the layered pauldrons, and the flowing tattered cape all offer distinct surfaces to push highlights and pull shadows. The open-faced skull beneath that imposing horned helm gives painters a chance to really make the eye sockets sing with freehand or OSL effects. Equally, the skeletal lower legs and exposed joints make for a striking visual break between the grandeur of the armour above and the grim reality of what this thing actually is.

This is a miniature for Dungeon Masters who want their undead encounters to feel like a military threat rather than a shambling inconvenience — and for painters and collectors who appreciate a skeleton that carries real gravitas on the shelf.

Particularly well-suited for adventurers who:

  • Run undead warbands or skeleton legions as a recurring faction
  • Want a Wight, Death Knight champion, or elite undead soldier for set-piece encounters
  • Are painting a Ravenloft, Shadowfell, or gothic horror campaign setting
  • Collect display-quality undead miniatures and want something with genuine armour detail
  • Play a Grave Cleric, Oathbreaker Paladin, or Necromancer who commands martial undead

Encounter Hook

The party discovers that the missing garrison of Fort Morwen wasn't slaughtered — it was conscripted. Forty soldiers in familiar armour march out of the fog in perfect formation, shields locked, silent. At their head, the captain's horned helm is unmistakeable. The Dungeon Master places the first miniature on the mat. Then another. Then another.
