This mounted skeleton bannerman is every undead warlord's herald made manifest. A skeletal knight in layered plate armour sits astride an equally skeletal warhorse — both rider and mount stripped of flesh yet clad in the trappings of a once-proud cavalry regiment. The knight raises a long lance-style pole bearing a tattered, skull-adorned war banner, its ragged edges suggesting countless campaigns fought long after death claimed the army entire. A sword rides at the hip, ready for close work, and a long cloak billows from the rider's shoulders.

The skeletal horse is sculpted with the same care as the rider — bony legs, exposed ribcage, and armoured barding that mirrors the knight's own plate. It's a large-based model (51mm oval) with genuine presence on any battlefield, commanding attention whether it's leading a unit of skeleton warriors or holding its own ground on a display shelf. The multipart construction allows for crisp detail across both rider and mount, and the ornamental base adds grounding without overwhelming the silhouette.

As a painting project this piece rewards patient layering — the contrast between corroded armour, pale bone, and tattered fabric offers a wealth of textural variety. Wash the recesses hard, drybrush the plate and bone separately, and let that banner tell its own story of a standard carried through decades of undeath.

Suits adventurers who:

  • Run undead armies, death knight warbands, or necromancer-led hordes
  • Need a mounted officer or elite cavalry commander for their skeleton forces
  • Love Ravenloft, Shadowfell, or graveyard encounter settings
  • Collect display-quality undead miniatures with genuine character
  • Want a centrepiece model that earns its place at the head of a regiment

Encounter Hook

The party crests the ridge to find the valley floor carpeted with undead — and at their head, a mounted figure bearing a tattered banner stitched with the sigil of a kingdom that fell three centuries ago. Destroying the bannerman won't stop the tide, but it will shatter the formation's cohesion — if the adventurers can reach it through two hundred skeletons first.
