The Shambling Mound is one of D&D's most iconic and unsettling plant creatures — a walking mass of rotting vegetation, tangled roots, and bark-wrapped muscle that moves with terrifying purpose. This sculpt from Epic Miniatures captures the creature mid-lunge, its enormous body hunched forward and one great arm sweeping wide with a fan of trailing vine-tendrils. The surface texture is extraordinary: layer upon layer of interlocking bark strips, writhing fibrous roots, and jagged wooden spines give the creature a genuinely organic, overgrown quality. A wide, toothy maw is buried low in the mass of the body, almost hidden beneath the creature's slumping bulk — easy to miss until it's far too late.
Mounted on a large 51mm base, this miniature commands serious table presence. The hunched, forward-lurching pose communicates momentum and aggression — this thing is not standing still. The trailing tendrils of the outstretched arm and the root-clawed feet add dynamic energy to what could easily have been a static lump. Every angle rewards close inspection: the back view reveals the interwoven bark plates and vine bundles in even greater detail, making this a rewarding piece for painters who love texture work. Drybrushing alone will bring out the depth of the surface, while washes and layering can take it to a truly evocative forest-creature finish.
This is a large creature by D&D rules — typically occupying a 10-foot space — and the 51mm base reflects that. It slots naturally into any forest, swamp, or jungle encounter, and works equally well as a corrupted nature guardian, a boss creature lurking in a druid's sacred grove gone wrong, or an elemental horror summoned by dark magic.
A good pick for adventurers who:
- Run forest, swamp, or jungle encounters and want a monster with genuine presence
- Love painting deep organic textures — bark, vine, root, and rot
- Need a large creature that fits standard D&D encounter rules
- Collect plant-type creatures or nature-horror miniatures for their display shelf
- Want a versatile monster that works across D&D 5e, Pathfinder, and other TTRPGs
Encounter Hook
The party has been tracking a missing druidic circle deep into the Thornwood — but as they reach the sacred heart of the grove, the ancient oak at its centre shudders, splits, and pulls itself free of the earth. The grove's protector has been corrupted by something far older than any druid's blessing, and it has already absorbed two of the circle's members into its mass. The players have thirty feet before it reaches them — and lightning only makes it faster.
