This is pose 2 of our Ratswarm range by Witchsong Miniatures, and it is a genuinely unsettling piece of sculpting work. Dozens of rats spiral upward in a heaving mass, their bodies overlapping and intertwined as they collectively hoist a long-hafted spear with a wicked split-tip blade. There is no humanoid figure here — only the swarm, acting with a single terrible purpose. Whether you interpret this as a hive-minded creature, a manifestation of plague-magic, or something that crawled out of the Underdark with ambitions far above its station, the visual language is unmistakable: this is not a natural thing.
The base is thick with writhing forms, smaller rats spilling outward at the edges as larger ones clamber toward the weapon at the centre. The silhouette is dramatic and column-like, making it an eye-catching presence both on a gaming table and on a display shelf. This piece works equally well as a monstrous encounter piece, a summoned swarm under a necromancer's command, or a deeply unsettling environmental hazard in a sewer or ruined temple.
Suited to adventurers who:
- Need a genuinely unnerving swarm encounter that goes beyond a simple token
- Are building a Underdark, plague-themed, or urban sewer campaign and want set-piece monsters
- Collect unusual creature sculpts with strong narrative presence
- Enjoy painting complex organic textures — dozens of individual rats means exceptional detail at every level
Encounter Hook:
The city's rat-catcher guild has gone silent, their last report mentioning something vast moving through the drain tunnels beneath the merchant quarter — something that left a single spear embedded in the sewer wall, still quivering, with no wielder in sight.
