There is something deeply unsettling about a scarecrow that walks. This sculpt from Epic Miniatures captures that unease with remarkable precision — a hunched, raggedy figure with a carved pumpkin head, hollow triangular eyes, and that wide, stitched grin that belongs somewhere between a harvest festival decoration and a genuine threat. The broad hat frames the face with theatrical menace, its brim warped and curled as though it has weathered a hundred seasons in forgotten fields.
The layered tattered robes hang in frayed strips, knotted rope cinching a rotund middle, with every fold and tear rendered with the kind of detail that rewards a careful painter. One clawed hand clutches what appears to be a small skull or lantern — a grim trophy or guiding light, depending on your interpretation. A curved blade hangs at its hip, suggesting this particular scarecrow has moved well beyond its original purpose. The sculpt has real personality: part folk horror, part dark fairy tale, part encounter that will make your players genuinely uncomfortable when they realise the thing in the field has been watching them for some time.
Whether you paint it in autumnal ochres and burnt umbers for a Ravenloft harvest horror, or lean into something more supernatural with glowing eyes and eldritch shadows, this miniature rewards every hour you put into it. It makes a compelling display piece on any shelf alongside gothic and seasonal collections, and an even more compelling monster token when dropped onto the table mid-session.
Well suited for adventurers who:
- Run gothic horror, Ravenloft, or harvest-themed D&D sessions
- Want a Halloween or seasonal centrepiece for their display shelf
- Need an unsettling, low-CR creature that reads immediately across the table
- Love painting intricate textures — torn cloth, rough rope, weathered wood and carved gourd
- Are building out a folk horror encounter featuring animated constructs and cursed farmland
Encounter Hook
The village of Millhaven hasn't harvested its western field in three years. The scarecrows the farmers erected to ward off crows have not moved — until last Tuesday, when one of them turned to face the road. The party arrives to find the scarecrows positioned in a rough circle around the farmhouse, each one a yard closer than the night before. And in the centre of the field, a single pumpkin-headed figure stands perfectly still, holding something small and pale in one hand. It does not move. But it knows you are there.
