Frederik Vahlen cuts an imposing figure — broad-shouldered and battle-worn, yet draped in the long coat and scholarly trappings of an academic who has never fully left the field behind. His coat is layered and ornate, decorated with rope-worked trim, arcane clasps, and a heavy fur-collared mantle across his shoulders that speaks of authority earned, not granted. His expression is hard, watchful, and entirely unapologetic — this is a man who has decided the ends justify the means and stopped second-guessing that conclusion long ago.
In one outstretched hand he grips a tall twisted staff, its shaft wound with spiralling arcane detail and crowned with a crescent-horned finial enclosing a glowing orb — a focus that radiates control rather than wonder. Behind him, his cloak billows dramatically in a wide sweeping arc, frozen mid-stride as though he has just turned to face something he was not expecting to find. It is a pose full of coiled tension and deliberate authority.
The sculpt is rich with surface detail throughout — the rope-like texture of his collar and mantle, the layered buckles and rings across his chest, the bound wrappings at his shins, and the cracked stone texture of his integrated base. From the back, the flowing cloak dominates, with deep fabric folds catching light and shadow in ways that reward a careful painter's attention.
This miniature works beautifully as a morally ambiguous wizard NPC, an arcane mentor hiding dangerous secrets, or a BBEG whose villainy stems from brilliance rather than malice. He would also serve as a compelling player character — a wizard or artificer who has climbed the academic ranks and carries every scar of that ascent.
This miniature is well-suited for adventurers who:
- Need a commanding wizard NPC for a magical academy or arcane institution campaign
- Want a morally complex antagonist with gravitas and presence on the table
- Are running a steampunk-adjacent or arcane-technology setting
- Play a wizard, artificer, or sorcerer and want a high-detail sculpt with real character
- Enjoy painting flowing fabric, layered clothing, and intricate surface ornamentation
Encounter Hook: The party has been summoned to the Arcane University's inner sanctum by the Dean herself — but when they arrive, it is Frederik Vahlen waiting for them instead, staff in hand and a dossier on the table detailing everything he knows about each of them. He smiles and says he has a proposition that the Dean need not know about. He does not ask if they are interested.
