The Primal Centipede Stand from Epic Miniatures is one of those sculpts that immediately earns its place at the table — not because giant centipedes are unusual, but because this one is doing something. The creature is caught mid-rise, its armoured body coiling in a dramatic upward spiral as it rears from a broken rocky base. From one angle you get the full horror of its segmented underside and thrashing legs; from the other, the chitinous head looms forward with fanged mandibles spread wide and antennae raised, ready to lunge. There's genuine dynamism here — this isn't a centipede sitting flat on the ground, it's a centipede in the act of claiming the moment.
The sculpt sits on a large 51mm base, which gives it the physical presence its size demands. The segmentation across the body is crisp and highly detailed — each section distinct, the legs varied in angle and position as if caught mid-skitter. The rocky formation it emerges from adds a naturalistic anchor, making this work equally well as a creature bursting from Underdark tunnels, a jungle floor, or the earthen walls of a dungeon cavern. Painted, this piece would reward a dark chitinous colour scheme with vibrant accent work on the mandibles and legs — a genuinely satisfying large-scale painting project as well as a functional encounter piece.
This miniature suits adventurers who:
- Run Underdark campaigns and want large, threatening invertebrate encounters
- Need a visually dynamic beast encounter that commands attention on the table
- Enjoy large-scale monster painting projects with strong surface texture
- Want a display piece that reads as menacing from every angle
- Are building out wilderness or dungeon encounter groups
Encounter Hook: The party has been following a merchant's missing supply cart deeper into the cave network when the floor beneath the lead adventurer begins to vibrate. A moment later, the centipede erupts through the stone beside them — the cart's axle lodged between two of its body segments, dragged underground. The merchant's goods are somewhere inside the tunnel it came from. The creature is between the party and them.
