This Pincer Insectoid is a genuinely unsettling presence on the tabletop — a tall, angular creature that sits somewhere between a Thri-Kreen warrior and something that crawled out of the Far Realm and decided to get dressed. The sculpt leans into that uncanny quality: robed and wrapped in layered cloth bindings, yet clearly not humanoid in any comfortable sense. The head is a mass of chitinous ridges, serrated frills, and a gaping maw of needle-like teeth, flanked by swept-back horn-like protrusions. The armour is organic and spined — leg plates bristling with hooked barbs, arms wrapped in segmented chitin — and the whole figure carries a long-hafted hooked axe with a crescent blade, held across the body in a wide, deliberate fighting stance that suggests it knows exactly what it's doing.
The cloth wrappings add an interesting layer of character — this isn't a mindless beast, but something that belongs to a culture, possibly a warrior caste or a religious order. That ambiguity makes it enormously flexible for a Dungeon Master: it could serve as a Thri-Kreen variant, a homebrew aberrant soldier, a servitor of a Far Realm entity, or even a rival faction's elite fighter in a more exotic campaign setting.
Detail across the sculpt is sharp and well-considered — the textile folds in the robes, the individual barbs on the leg armour, and the serrated edge of the axe blade all hold up to close inspection, making this a rewarding piece to paint whether you're going for a naturalistic chitin palette or something more otherworldly.
Well suited for adventurers who:
- Run encounters against insectoid, aberrant, or Far Realm-adjacent creatures
- Need a Thri-Kreen warrior or exotic alien humanoid for their campaign
- Want a standout enemy mini that will genuinely unsettle players when it hits the table
- Enjoy painting complex textures — chitin, cloth wrappings, and organic armour all in one sculpt
- Are building a display piece around a creature that doesn't fit neatly into any one monster type
Encounter Hook
The party follows the trail of a missing merchant caravan into the ruins of an old Underdark outpost. They find the wagons intact, the goods untouched — and twelve perfect circles of disturbed earth where the drivers knelt before something. At the centre of the ruins, wrapped in cloth and utterly still, the Pincer Insectoid waits. It does not attack immediately. It tilts its head, raises the hooked axe slowly, and speaks in a language no one in the party has ever heard.
