The Old Heretic is a gaunt, wiry figure mid-stride — one bare foot raised, tattered robes streaming behind him — the very image of a holy man who has crossed over into something far more dangerous. His skull-topped staff is raised aloft in one hand, whilst a bundle of javelins and spears is clutched in the other, their bladed tips fanned outward like a threat made manifest. Skulls and grim trophies dangle from his belt, and a spiked crown or circlet sits upon his brow. Every detail of the sculpt speaks to a character who has traded reverence for power and paid a considerable price for it.

The sculpt is rich with storytelling potential. Those wrapped forearms, the bare and calloused feet, the collection of weapons far exceeding any single combatant's practical needs — this is a man who has fought his way to whatever corrupted enlightenment he now claims to possess. Whether he leads a fanatical cult, advises a warlord with dangerous wisdom, or simply wanders the wilderness performing rites best left unwitnessed, the Old Heretic brings genuine menace and character to any encounter or scene.

Equally compelling as a one-off villain encounter or as the ideological heart of a larger cult warband, he will read clearly across a gaming table whilst rewarding painters who take their time with his details.

Particularly well-suited for adventurers who:

  • Need a corrupted priest, fallen prophet, or cult leader NPC for a dark-themed campaign
  • Are running Ravenloft, Shadowfell, or any gothic horror arc
  • Want a morally complex antagonist with a lived-in, haggard look
  • Enjoy painting weathered cloth, bone, and tarnished ritual regalia
  • Are building an encounter group around a charismatic but dangerous spiritual leader

Encounter Hook: Midway through a pilgrimage road, the party spots a lone figure standing motionless at a crossroads — robes dirty, staff planted in the earth, a crow perched on his crown of spikes. Locals won't approach him. He doesn't speak first. When he finally does, he knows each character's name and something they haven't told anyone.
