Description

The drake's roar splits the mountain air before the party even rounds the bend — a sound like grinding stone and fury, warning that whatever lies beyond is guarded by something that does not negotiate.

  • ✔ 32mm scale resin miniature, printed fresh to order in the UK
  • ✔ Supplied unpainted and ready to prime
  • ✔ Compatible with D&D, Pathfinder, and all tabletop RPGs
  • ✔ Equally at home on the gaming table or the display shelf

The Obsidian Guard Drake is a creature built for intimidation — broad-chested and low to the ground, every ridge of its heavily plated scales suggesting something forged as much as born. The sculpt catches the animal mid-roar, jaws thrown open wide to reveal a maw of serrated teeth, the body locked in a coiled, forward-lunging stance that makes it look seconds from a charge. A dramatic dorsal fin rises from the spine like a blade, and the long, segmented tail extends behind it for balance and threat in equal measure.

The level of scale and texture detail on this sculpt rewards patient brushwork. The layered, overlapping scales across the flanks and belly provide a natural transition point for zenithal highlighting, whilst the dorsal spines and face are sharp enough to take edge highlighting cleanly. Whether you paint it in obsidian blacks and cool greys to match its name, or use it as the canvas for something more exotic — iridescent blues, volcanic reds — the forms do the heavy lifting for you.

As a gaming piece, the Guard Drake slots into a wide range of encounters. It reads instantly as a creature of threat and territory — the kind of beast a dragon might station at the entrance to its lair, or that a cult of dragon-worshippers might have domesticated just enough to direct but never truly tame. At medium base size it sits comfortably alongside humanoid minis on the table without overwhelming the scene, while still commanding presence.

Well suited to adventurers who:

  • Run lair encounters and need a believable draconic sentry
  • Want a creature that works as both a combat piece and a painted display model
  • Are building a dragon-themed warband, cult, or dungeon encounter
  • Enjoy painting large-scale texture work — scales, spines, and natural armour
  • Need a creature that looks dangerous before a single die is rolled

Encounter Hook: The party has tracked a missing merchant's wagon to a collapsed mine entrance in the foothills. The wagon is there, overturned and stripped. So is the merchant's bodyguard — or what's left of him. As the ranger moves to examine the claw marks gouged into the wagon's undercarriage, a sound erupts from the darkness of the mine shaft: a deep, rattling roar. Two amber eyes open in the black. The Obsidian Guard Drake has been here a long time. It is not leaving.
