Guard drakes are the enforcers of dragonkind — not the apex predators themselves, but their loyal, vicious subordinates, bred and broken to serve. The Obsidian Guard Drake Ambush sculpt captures one of these creatures mid-lunge: head thrown back and jaws wide open, serrated teeth bared in a threat display that leaves nothing to the imagination. The neck is thick with overlapping scale plates, and a pronounced dorsal sail runs along the spine in sharp, blade-like ridges. Every surface of this sculpt rewards a painter's brush — the tight belly scales, the layered plating along the flanks, and the whip-like tail terminating in a spiked fin all offer tremendous detail and natural shadow wells for washes and dry-brushing alike.
This is a creature clearly in motion — haunches braced and one foreleg raised, weight shifting forward as though it has just cleared an obstacle at full sprint. The posture communicates aggression without ambiguity, making it equally effective as an encounter piece mid-combat and as a display miniature on a shelf. Whether you paint it in jet-black obsidian tones with subtle iridescent highlights, or go rogue with a deep ocean-blue colour scheme, the sculpt has the structure to carry serious paintwork.
Guard drakes pair naturally with kobold handlers, dragon cultist entourages, or a juvenile chromatic dragon as their apex overlord. They are savage enough to be threatening on their own but versatile enough to slot into almost any encounter involving draconic factions, dungeon ambushes, or a BBEG's personal menagerie.
- Dungeon Masters running draconic cult encounters who need a credible physical threat that isn't a full dragon
- Pathfinder and D&D 5e players who want a ferocious beast companion or familiar sculpt to represent a Drake-adjacent creature
- Miniature painters drawn to scale-heavy creatures with deep surface texture and strong silhouettes
- Collectors building out a dragon-themed display shelf with varied creature types
Encounter Hook: The party has been hired to investigate a series of merchant disappearances along the Ashveil Road. Tracking blood and claw marks into the ruins of an old watchtower, they discover a dragon cultist cell using two Obsidian Guard Drakes as sentinels — the drakes are chained, starved, and primed to attack anything that enters without the correct passphrase. One chain is already showing stress fractures.
