The Noble Historian is a character every table recognises the moment he hits the mat — the learned man well out of his depth. Rotund, bearded, and dressed in the layered doublet and puffed breeches of a prosperous academic, he has clearly not spent his career in combat. And yet here he stands, a broad-bladed cutlass thrust skyward in one hand and a knotted torch hoisted overhead in the other, his wide-brimmed cap still perched on his head with absurd dignity. The expression — that wide-eyed, open-mouthed look of a man who has just read about monsters his entire career and is now meeting one personally — sells the entire sculpt.

This is a miniature with genuine comic energy, but it earns its place at the serious table too. The detailing on his padded coat, his rope-bound sleeves, the folds of his voluminous breeches, and the braided knot of the torch head are all rendered with the crisp clarity that makes a sculpt a joy to paint.
