No one in the village can say how long it has stood there — only that the twisted spines seem to lean a little closer each morning, and the orb at its crown has never once gone dark.

This is the third variation in Novaminis' Mysterious Device series, and it is perhaps the most unsettling of the set. A column of intertwined, blade-like tendrils spirals upward from a layered circular base, erupting into sharp outward spines at mid-height before converging once more to cradle a smooth, perfectly spherical orb at its apex. The form is neither plant nor machine nor architecture — it is something else entirely, and that ambiguity is precisely what makes it so useful at the table.

The sculpt has a distinctly otherworldly quality: the sinuous twist of the tendrils suggests organic growth, but the geometry is too precise, too deliberate, to be natural. Whether you paint it as a pulsing Far Realm artefact, a calcified eldritch node, a construct of aberrant origin, or an ancient ward left behind by a forgotten civilisation, the design supports all of these readings without forcing any one of them.

As a piece of scatter terrain, it works equally well as a focal point on a dungeon tile, a haunting presence in a Shadowfell encounter, or a strange landmark in a wilderness hex. It is also a compelling painting project in its own right — the interplay of curved and sharp surfaces gives painters plenty to work with using washes, object source lighting, or stippled energy effects.

Encounter Hook: The party's ranger tracks a missing merchant caravan to a forest clearing where three of these devices stand in a triangle formation, the ground between them scorched in a perfect circle. The merchant's wagon sits undisturbed at the centre — but the horses, the driver, and the merchant himself are simply gone. The orbs pulse in slow, unsynchronised rhythms, and one of them is warm to the touch.
