Description

No one in the party could agree on whether it was a machine, an organism, or something far older than either — but every arcana check came back with the same result: inconclusive.

The Mysterious Device 02 is the second variation in Novaminis' unsettling series of otherworldly constructs — and where the first may have suggested something mechanical, this one leans unmistakably into the organic and the alien. Three towering limb-like columns rise from a tangled base of barbed, serrated tentacles, each column splitting into spiralling fronds that curl inward around glowing orbs. The central pillar is the tallest and most elaborate, its interlocking petals cradling a large sphere at its apex. The flanking columns mirror it at a smaller scale, giving the whole structure a crown-like symmetry that feels both deliberate and deeply wrong.

The detail across this sculpt is exceptional — the ribbed texture of the lower tentacles, the layered frond architecture of the upper columns, and the contrast between smooth sphere and jagged spine create a piece that rewards a careful paintjob. Whether you interpret it as a Far Realm beacon, an aboleth's communication relay, a crystallised spell effect, or simply an ancient artefact no sage can identify, it carries genuine narrative weight the moment it hits the table.

This is variation 02 of the series — distinct in its tri-column arrangement and more elaborate central structure compared to the first device. Collecting both gives your table a cluster of aberrant machinery that implies a much larger, more terrifying installation beyond the players' sight.

Well-suited to adventurers who:

  • Run Far Realm, Underdark, or cosmic horror encounters
  • Want arcane or aberrant scatter terrain with genuine character
  • Are building dioramas or display scenes with an alien aesthetic
  • Need a prop to anchor an investigation or mystery around an unidentifiable object
  • Already own Device 01 and want to complete the set

Encounter Hook: The party enters the lowest chamber of the aboleth's lair to find three of these devices arranged in a triangle, each sphere pulsing in slow, synchronised rhythm. The floor between them is scorched clean. A Detect Magic spell reveals conjuration and transmutation auras layered so thickly they're almost indistinguishable — but the Arcana check to understand what they're actually doing keeps failing, no matter how high the roll.
