This is Variation 01 of the Mysterious Clockwork Device — a compact, self-contained scatter terrain piece that does a great deal of storytelling work all on its own. Seated on a tiered circular plinth with a riveted outer collar, the device features a domed central shell that appears to be irising open, its curved panels peeling back like the petals of some mechanical flower to expose a cluttered interior of cogs, blocks, and unidentifiable arcane components.

The sculpt captures two distinct states in a single piece: closed (a smooth, seamless dome suggesting dormancy or concealment) and open (a dramatically splayed arrangement of curved panels framing the chaotic machinery within). Whether you read it as a construct's egg cracking open, a gnomish bomb primed to detonate, or a Modron relay station mid-cycle, the device carries genuine narrative weight.

The tiered plinth base means it reads clearly even at tabletop distance — it's not a prop that disappears among the scatter. Paint it in verdigris copper for a Mechanus flavour, polished brass for a steampunk dungeon, or dark iron with arcane runes for something more ominous on the Shadowfell.

Particularly well-suited for adventurers who:

  • Run steampunk, Mechanus, or arcane-technology-heavy campaigns
  • Need interactive-looking terrain props as quest objectives or environmental hazards
  • Want scatter pieces that read as mysterious artefacts without requiring additional context
  • Are building a display diorama around a gnomish workshop or artificer's laboratory

Encounter Hook: The Artificer Guildmaster's stolen prototype sits in the middle of the vault floor — dome cracked open, mechanisms spinning of their own accord. The party has three rounds to deactivate it before it completes whatever sequence it was designed to perform. Nobody in the party can identify what that sequence is. The timer doesn't care.
