Mother Brinna is one of those NPCs who makes a harbour market feel genuinely alive. Broad-shouldered and barrel-armed, she stands with the easy confidence of someone who has been hauling catches since before your party was born. Cradled against her body is a wide wooden tub overflowing with writhing octopuses, and in her raised hand she holds one aloft — its tentacles trailing — as if presenting today's finest specimen to a prospective buyer who had better not haggle.
The sculpt is rich in mercantile character: layered skirts, bracelet-laden wrists, large hoop earrings, and a cloth wrap in her hair all speak to a life spent on the waterfront. Her expression is delightfully smug — the look of someone who knows the catch is good and knows you know it too. Round the back, a thick braid falls across her shawl and an impressive mane of hair frames the piece with just as much personality as the front. She's the sort of NPC that adventurers remember long after the session ends.
Whether she's a legitimate fishmonger, a fence for smuggled goods, or the unexpected linchpin of a coastal conspiracy, Mother Brinna brings narrative weight the moment she hits the table. She works equally well as a beloved recurring NPC and as an eye-catching display piece for anyone who appreciates character sculpts with genuine soul.
Particularly well suited to adventurers who:
- Run coastal towns, harbour districts, or seafaring campaigns
- Want a memorable market NPC that players will actually remember
- Enjoy painting character-driven sculpts full of texture and personality
- Are building out an urban or nautical encounter scene for the display shelf
Encounter Hook
The party arrives at Saltmere Quay to find the morning market in uproar. Mother Brinna is loudly refusing to sell to the Harbormaster's men — and the tub of octopuses she's cradling contains something that definitely isn't a cephalopod. She catches the party's eye over the crowd and mouths two words: Help me.
