This is variant 05 from Novaminis' Mind Flayer range, and it cuts a distinctly different silhouette from its kin. Where many illithid sculpts favour robes and staves, this one exudes the quiet menace of a psionics-wielding priest-militant. Arms spread wide in a pose of psychic dominance, clawed fingers reaching, the figure wears a skull-buckled belt hung with heavy braided chains — trophies, fetishes, or restraints for the minds it has already broken. Spiked bracers line both forearms, and the shoulder armour bristles with barbed protrusions that suggest this elder being has long since stopped pretending to be civilised.
The tentacled face is raised in an expression of cold superiority, framed by a crown of bony spines. The lower half is draped in layered robes with fine ornamental relief work visible across the front panel — a striking contrast to the brutality of the upper body. Painted, this mini will reward careful attention to the texture transitions between the pale, ribbed skin, the dark fabric of the kilt, and the oxidised metal of those chains. The chains themselves are particularly well resolved at this scale and will take a wash beautifully.
Whether you run this as a standalone Mind Flayer villain or as an arcanist within an illithid colony encounter, the pose reads clearly across the table — this one is reaching into your characters' minds right now.
This miniature suits adventurers who:
- Need a visually distinct Mind Flayer to serve as a colony's psionic enforcer or high priest
- Are building an illithid-heavy Underdark arc or Out of the Abyss campaign
- Want a characterful aberration for use as a recurring BBEG or mid-tier boss encounter
- Enjoy painting complex texture contrasts — skin, fabric, and metal all in one piece
- Are collectors drawn to detailed display pieces with strong narrative presence
Encounter Hook
The party descends into the fungal cathedral at the heart of the drow city only to find it occupied — not by drow, but by this figure, standing motionless at the altar with its arms outstretched and three unconscious drow suspended in the air around it. It turns, slowly. It already knows why they've come.
