The Mind Eater Guard cuts a deeply unsettling silhouette — lean, upright, and deceptively composed. This is no mindless thrall shambling at the colony's fringes; this is something that has been refined. The figure stands at attention, bearing a tall twisted-shafted spear with a wicked crystalline tip, its posture carrying the eerie calm of an organism that no longer questions its orders because questioning is no longer possible.
The face is the thing that lingers. A mass of writhing tentacles where a mouth and chin should be, a broad domed brow, hollow expressionless eyes — the visual grammar of the mind flayer rendered in miniature with excellent clarity of detail. Engraved swirling patterns decorate the wide pauldrons of its armour, echoing the arcane aesthetics of illithid craft, while chain links and a skull-ornamented belt cinch a flowing tunic around its torso. Wrapped lower legs, clawed gauntlets and heavy boots complete the look — martial without being mundane, alien without being impractical.
The sculpt rewards a painter's attention. The layered cloth offers opportunities for wet blending and contrast paints; the armour engraving practically begs for a careful drybrush; and that face — the tentacles especially — will shine under a layered wash approach that picks out every curl and coil. Whether you're building out an illithid encounter or adding a centrepiece NPC to your Underdark session, this figure carries real presence on the table.
Suits adventurers who:
- Are running an illithid colony arc or Underdark campaign
- Need a sentinel-type enemy to guard a mind flayer elder brain's sanctum
- Want a characterful NPC — a ceremorphed former adventurer the party might once have known
- Are painting display pieces and want a subject with genuinely distinctive facial anatomy
Encounter Hook: The party's contact in the Underdark warned them to avoid the eastern passage — but that was before they heard the distant echo of boots on stone. Now, standing motionless in the archway ahead, spear held vertical and eyes fixed on a point somewhere beyond the party, is a single guard. It hasn't raised an alarm. It hasn't moved. It's simply waiting — and the elder brain it serves already knows you're there.
