Mind Flayers are terrifying enough as psionic overlords — but this one has forgone the ceremonial robes for something far more dangerous: the patient stillness of a trained killer. This Mind Eater Assassin is coiled in a wide combat stance, one hooked blade raised and ready, a second tucked against the body in a reverse grip. Rope bindings wrap the limbs and torso in the manner of an experienced street-fighter or shadow operative, and a bladed weapon is slung across the back for good measure. The bare, clawed feet and exposed musculature give this sculpt a raw, feral energy that sets it apart from the arcane detachment of a typical illithid.

The face — what little is visible — is partially obscured by a cloth wrapping, the tentacles coiling beneath like a secret barely contained. There is something deeply unsettling about the deliberateness of the pose: this is not a creature that attacks in a frenzy. It waits. It calculates. And when it moves, it is already too late.

With a generous amount of surface detail across the rope-bound armour, layered pouches, and exposed skin textures, this miniature rewards careful painting. Wash-and-drybrush techniques will bring out the rope work beautifully, while the face offers a compelling challenge for anyone who wants to explore the alien colouring of an illithid's skin — deep purples, mottled greys, or even something wholly unexpected.

Suited to adventurers who enjoy:

  • Running Underdark intrigue campaigns where the illithid threat is personal and close
  • Representing a rogue Mind Flayer who has abandoned the elder brain in favour of independent contract work
  • Bringing a genuinely unsettling enemy to the table that breaks player expectations
  • Painting a technically interesting creature with rich textural variety
  • Adding a display-worthy villain to a collection of aberrations and horrors

Encounter Hook

The party has been hired to protect a merchant caravan travelling through the outskirts of a city known for its thieves' guilds. On the second night, the merchant is found dead in a locked wagon — no forced entry, no witnesses, no conventional wounds. A DC 18 Medicine check reveals the cause of death was not a blade but something extracted from the skull. Somewhere in the darkness between the wagons, a rope-wrapped silhouette adjusts its grip on a hooked blade and decides whether the investigators are worth the trouble.
