This sculpt is a deliciously unsettling fusion of Mind Flayer anatomy and artificer ingenuity. The figure crouches into a braced, dynamic pose — robes swept mid-stride, braided leg wrappings taught with tension — as it hefts an oversized arcane cannon onto its shoulder. The weapon is a masterwork of weird science: a multi-barrelled rotary muzzle, coiled cable conduit wrapped around the stock, and a pressurised canister fitted to the side, all rendered with the kind of obsessive mechanical detail that rewards painters who love a technical challenge.
The head is unmistakably illithid — that elongated, cowled cranium and the suggestion of facial tentacles beneath a wrapped, mask-like covering give the character an eerie, disguised quality, as though this Mind Flayer has learned to pass among artificers without drawing too much attention. The robes hang in heavy, naturalistic folds, decorated with a toothed gear motif embossed near the hem — a subtle tell that this creature has gone fully native in the world of arcane technology. Stitched patches and quilted armour sections visible on the reverse add texture and character that will respond beautifully to washes and drybrushing alike.
This is a miniature that works equally well as a villain pulling strings in a steampunk undercity, a BBEG artificer whose psionic experiments have gone catastrophically wrong, or an unconventional player character concept for any adventurer who wants to walk the line between monster and mastermind.
Especially suited for adventurers who:
- Run campaigns where the Underdark meets arcane industry — think illithid colonies with a manufacturing problem
- Want a BBEG with a distinct visual identity that reads as both monstrous and intellectual
- Are building out a steampunk or Eberron-adjacent setting with non-human artificers
- Love intricate detail on robes, mechanical props, and layered textures that reward careful painting
- Play or DM with Artificer PCs and want a themed enemy or rival to mirror their class
Encounter Hook
The party traces a string of unexplained disappearances to a sealed workshop beneath the artificers' quarter. Inside, surrounded by half-finished constructs and psionic resonance dampeners, the Mind Eater Artificer barely looks up from its workbench — it has been expecting them for three days. It levels the arcane cannon with one hand and asks, with unsettling calm, whether they'd like to volunteer for the next phase of testing.
