Few traps earn a groan from veteran players like the trusty mimic — and this wardrobe variant is one of the most satisfying sculpts of the concept we've seen. From the outside, it reads as an ornate piece of furniture: panelled sides, a carved decorative crest at the top, and wood-grain texture running the full height of the piece. Look closer, and the illusion collapses in the most glorious way. The cabinet doors have been wrenched open to reveal a cavernous maw lined with rows of irregular, jagged teeth, and a thick, segmented pseudopod lolls out from the lower half like a tongue — or a limb mid-lunge. The creature's body fills the interior completely, pushing against the woodwork from within.

The sculpt sits at large size, making it a genuine centrepiece on any dungeon encounter map. The contrast between the elegant furniture exterior and the grotesque organic horror within gives it enormous visual impact, whether you're springing it on unsuspecting players or painting it up for a display shelf. The wood grain on the outer panels rewards careful drybrushing, while the maw interior is practically begging for a wet-blended fleshy palette and a generous coat of gloss varnish on the teeth.

This is the kind of piece that gets a reaction at the table — the moment it lands on the mat, every player in the room immediately distrusts every other piece of furniture you've placed in the dungeon. Job done.

This mini suits adventurers who:

  • Run dungeon delves packed with environmental traps and ambush creatures
  • Want a large-scale mimic that goes beyond the classic chest variant
  • Love painting contrast pieces — elegant exterior vs. visceral, organic horror within
  • Are building out a dungeon scatter collection with character and narrative weight
  • Know their players will immediately photograph it and send it to everyone they know

Encounter Hook: The party has been searching the manor for the missing merchant's ledger. The study looks untouched — papers neat, quill still in its stand. In the corner, a tall wardrobe. As the rogue reaches for the handle, the DC 15 Perception check that nobody made suddenly feels very relevant. Roll initiative.
