The weary party spots a campsite ahead — canvas walls, a low ridge-pole, the promise of shelter. The ranger notices the smell first. Then the tent opens its eye.

This Mimic Tent from Epic Miniatures is a large-scale scatter terrain piece with a deliciously sinister twist. At first glance it reads as a traveller's canvas tent — layered fabric panels draped over a bamboo frame, the ridgeline sagging with the weight of the road. Look closer, and the deception unravels: a bulging cyclopean eye peers out from the entrance, a hooked tongue curls beneath the flap, and rows of vicious spines line the tent's left flank where the canvas has begun to shift and writhe. The sculpt captures every horrifying detail of the transformation mid-reveal — the moment a safe refuge becomes a lethal ambush.

The scale inset in the render shows the piece towers over a standard d20, confirming this is a genuinely large terrain centrepiece rather than a token scatter piece. That extra bulk means it can anchor an entire encounter map — a ruined campsite, a roadside trap, a goblin ambush gone very wrong — without being lost among other elements. The bamboo lashing, the layered scalloped panels of the roof, and the organic spiked growths along the frame are all crisp and well-resolved, giving a painter plenty of surface texture to work with.

This is the kind of piece that earns its place in the collection simply by making your players second-guess every piece of terrain you ever place again.

Great for adventurers who:

  • Love placing devious environmental traps and watching the dawning horror on their players' faces
  • Are building a wilderness or roadside ambush encounter
  • Want a show-stopping display piece for a Mimic-themed collection
  • Play or run campaigns where nothing is ever quite what it seems
  • Are fans of the Mimic as a monster type and want one that goes beyond the classic chest

Encounter Hook: The party has been tracking a group of bandits who have been preying on merchant caravans along the King's Road. As night falls, they discover what appears to be an abandoned camp — bedrolls scattered, a fire pit still warm, and a single canvas tent standing at the clearing's edge. The Rogue creeps forward to search it. Roll Initiative.
