Few creatures embody the volatile temperament of the Elemental Planes quite like the Magma Mephit. This sculpt captures the creature mid-rise — dragged upward on a plume of fire and molten rock, its body a writhing mass of scorched scales and licking flame. The wings, each edged with jagged spurs, spread wide in a display that is equal parts threat and theatre. The whole form seems caught in a moment of furious ascent, as if the mephit has just been roused from a lava pool and is already furious about it.

The detail in this sculpt rewards careful painting. The textured, reptilian hide contrasts beautifully against the flowing, organic flames that wrap the wings and erupt from the base — giving any painter genuine variety in surface type to work with. A warm OSL approach from beneath, fading through orange and yellow to searing white at the hottest points, would bring this creature to life with real drama. Equally, a cooler, more obsidian treatment of the scales against deep magma tones would make for a striking display piece.

Encounter Hook: The party descends into the magma vents beneath the ruined forge-temple, tasked with retrieving a sealed artefact. They hear the mephit before they see it — a chittering, self-satisfied laugh echoing off the rock walls — and when it erupts from the lava channel ahead, wings spread and fire trailing, they realise something has already found the artefact first, and is very pleased with itself.
