The Mad Eye Sitting is one of those miniatures that unsettles before you even consider its stat block. Crouched low and draped in a voluminous, tattered robe, this aberrant creature carries the quiet menace of something that has been waiting in one spot for a very long time. Its single enormous eye — set within a riveted iron socket-frame and framed by the folds of its hood — dominates the sculpt entirely, giving the figure an uncanny, almost surveillance-like quality.
In one hand it grips a hooked, serrated blade — the kind of implement that suggests both utility and intent. The other hand rests near a squat cylindrical object on the ground beside it, a subtle narrative detail that invites speculation: a container, a trophy, a component for something far worse. The robes themselves are sculpted with impressive weight and drape, pooling around the creature's crossed legs and fraying at the hems with that worn, ancient quality common to things that have existed too long in dark places.
As a painting project, the Mad Eye Sitting rewards patient work on contrasts: the cold, smooth expanse of that great eye against the texture of roughspun cloth; the organic depth of a veined iris beside the hard geometry of the iron frame. Base it on cracked flagstones, luminescent fungus, or a pool of something dark — this creature belongs wherever the light runs out.
Pairs well with adventurers who:
- Run Underdark campaigns and need NPCs that unnerve before they attack
- Want a distinctive aberration encounter that breaks from the expected monster roster
- Enjoy painting challenging focal points — that iris is a genuine showcase piece
- Are building a display of strange and unsettling creatures for the shelf
- Need a cultist-adjacent figure whose allegiances remain deliberately ambiguous
Encounter Hook
The party finds the creature seated at the centre of a collapsed summoning circle in an abandoned Underdark outpost. It has not moved in days — perhaps longer. When the rogue gets within five feet, the eye opens fully and rotates, locking directly onto them. Initiative is rolled. The blade was already in its hand.
