The Hoopoe is one of those sculpts that rewards a second look. At first glance it's a goblin on a bird. Then you notice the feather-by-feather detail on those enormous spread wings, the rope harness cinched around the bird's chest, the tiny rider's beak-shaped helmet and raised weapon — and you realise this is a serious piece of artistry dressed up in something wonderfully absurd. The bird itself is a hulking, taloned creature, gripping a mossy branch with claws built for snatching things off the ground, its sharp bill and bright eye giving it the look of something ancient and wilful. The goblin perched on its back looks exactly as smug as someone who has solved the problem of not being big enough to be frightening.
Two distinct poses are available in this range: one showing the rider brandishing a sword with one hand, the other depicting the rider raising a mace or wand aloft — each capturing a slightly different energy, from swaggering cavalry charge to triumphant arrival. The sculpt works equally well as a Feywild encounter piece, a mounted goblin scout, a Warlock familiar with ideas above its station, or a display piece that'll draw questions from anyone who sees your shelf.
A good fit for adventurers who:
- Run Feywild or enchanted forest encounters and want something genuinely memorable
- Need a mounted goblin or fey creature with serious table presence
- Are building a goblin warband with unusual aerial support
- Paint for display and want a sculpt with layered feather texture to work into
- Collect fey miniatures and appreciate the balance of humour and craft
Encounter Hook:
The party has been tracking the stolen cartographer's maps for two days when a shadow sweeps across the road — a goblin on an enormous crested bird, saddlebag bulging with rolled parchment, already banking hard to the north and shrieking something that might be a challenge or might just be delight at being faster than everyone else.
Details
Printed at 32mm scale. The model and decorative base are supplied as separate pieces and can be attached with a small amount of glue — note that this sculpt interacts with its base in a way that makes the two look best assembled together. Supplied unprimed and unpainted, ready for your brush or for display as-is. Minor marks from the printing process may occasionally be present and are easily tidied up.
