The Hook Horror is one of D&D's most distinctive underground predators — a towering, bipedal nightmare that blends chitinous exoskeleton, hooked claws built for tearing, and an uncanny echolocation that makes hiding from it nearly impossible. This sculpt from Epic Miniatures captures that creature at its most dangerous: reared back on powerful taloned feet, one massive serrated claw raised high and the other braced forward, jaws wrenched open in a threat display that fills the room. The ribbed dorsal fins fanning from its spine add to the creature's alien silhouette, and the layered musculature beneath its hide gives it genuine physical menace.
A second angle reveals the creature's broad, heavily plated shell — a tortoise-like carapace sitting across its back that adds an extra layer of biological armour to an already fearsome beast. Far from slowing it down, this feature makes the Hook Horror feel like something that has simply never needed to fear anything that came before the party. The large 51mm base grounds the mini with rocky, broken terrain, giving it a sense of weight and scale that will dominate any encounter map.
Whether you're running an Underdark crawl, a cave network hex-map, or a subterranean encounter that needs a genuine shock monster, this Hook Horror delivers the table presence to match the threat.
This miniature suits adventurers who:
- Run Underdark campaigns where the Hook Horror is an apex predator of the deep tunnels
- Need a large monster with strong visual presence to anchor a mid-tier encounter
- Want a creature that rewards careful painting — the shell, exoskeleton, and musculature each offer distinct textures
- Collect creature minis for display alongside their D&D monster ranges
Encounter Hook: The party's guide goes silent mid-sentence. From somewhere deeper in the tunnel comes a steady, rhythmic click — claws dragged across stone in slow, deliberate strokes. Then a second set. Then a third. The Hook Horrors aren't hunting by sight. They already know exactly where the party is.
