The Hook Horror is one of the Underdark's most recognisable predators — part crustacean, part nightmare, all menace. This sculpt from Epic Miniatures captures the creature mid-lunge: its enormous hooked claws are spread wide apart, one raking upward in a savage swipe, the other angled low and ready to pin. The beaked head is thrown back in a screech, mandibles splayed, and every ridge and plate of the chitin-and-feather body is rendered with sharp, paint-ready detail. Flip the mini around and the domed, tessellated shell is equally striking — a broad, segmented carapace that tells you exactly how little this thing fears a counter-attack.

Mounted on a large 51mm base, this is a genuinely imposing presence at the table. Hook Horrors in D&D 5e are Large creatures, and this sculpt does full justice to that size — your players will clock it the moment it hits the mat. The dynamic attack pose gives painters plenty of surface variety to work with: smooth shell panels, textured chitin limbs, leathery hide across the chest, and clawed bird-like feet that grip the base with real weight.

Particularly well-suited for adventurers who:

  • Run Underdark campaigns through Menzoberranzan, the Labyrinth, or their own subterranean horrors
  • Want a Large creature with genuine table presence to anchor a cavern encounter
  • Are building out an Underdark bestiary with accurate D&D 5e creatures
  • Love a challenging painting project with rich texture variety across the whole sculpt
  • Display painted minis alongside Underdark terrain or in a creature showcase

Encounter Hook

The party has been following a series of rhythmic booming calls through the tunnels — the Underdark equivalent of a hunting cry. When they round a bend into a vast vaulted cavern, two Hook Horrors are already circling something in the dark. Whether the creature they've cornered is an enemy, an ally, or just bait for an ambush is a question the adventurers will have to answer fast — because the larger Hook Horror has already noticed them, and one hook is already raised.
