Hippofolk Mercenary Veteran (Commodore Krux) by Monster Atlas

They said the Commodore retired. They were wrong — he just traded the battlefield for back-alley contracts, and his fee has only gone up.

Commodore Krux is a hippofolk mercenary veteran who looks like he has seen three wars, survived all of them on sheer stubbornness, and still found time to press his coat. Broad-shouldered and barrel-chested beneath a heavy double-breasted trench coat, he carries himself with the unhurried confidence of someone who has never once been the most frightened person in a room. A flat cap sits at a slight angle atop his wide hippopotamus head, and a smoking pipe rests at the corner of his jaw — because danger, apparently, can wait while he finishes his smoke.

In his thick-fingered hands he cradles what appears to be a steampunk-tinged contraption — a mechanical device bristling with a curved barrel, coiled rings, and secondary components — held close to his barrel chest with the practiced ease of a man who has carried heavy things for a very long time. His laced boots are worn but solid, planted wide. This is a miniature that radiates quiet menace and world-weary competence in equal measure.

The sculpt rewards painters who enjoy strong fabric folds and layered clothing — the coat alone offers long lapels, heavy buttons, and deeply cut creases that take washes and highlights beautifully. His face, with its broad hippopotamus features and half-lidded eyes, gives painters a compelling portrait subject: a veteran who has stopped being impressed by threats.

Commodore Krux works equally well as a named NPC mercenary employer, a recurring guild contact, a morally ambiguous quest-giver, or a fully realised player character in steampunk-adjacent, urban, or weird west campaigns.

Adventurers who want this miniature tend to be:

• Dungeon Masters building out a mercenary guild or criminal underworld
• Players running a heavy-weapon fighter, gunslinger, or gruff veteran PC
• Painters drawn to character studies with strong facial presence and cloth texture
• Collectors seeking distinctive anthropomorphic character sculpts

Encounter Hook: The party has been hired to recover a stolen artefact — but when they arrive at the handover point, Commodore Krux is already there, the artefact tucked under one arm and a mechanical device levelled at the person who hired the party. He doesn't explain himself. He just names his price and suggests they decide quickly.
