Where the veil between worlds grows thin, hooves fall silent on the frost-blackened grass — and those who hear the wingbeat of feathers know that death has come riding.

  • ✔ 32mm scale resin, printed fresh to order in the UK
  • ✔ All pieces supplied unpainted and ready to prime
  • ✔ Great value for building out encounter groups or display collections

The Helhest is a creature drawn from Norse and Scandinavian folklore — a three-legged death omen that stalks the roads near graveyards, heralding plague and misfortune. This sculpt by Epic Miniatures interprets the legend through a distinctly dark fantasy lens: a horse-shaped monstrosity with a bare, grinning skull for a head, its mane replaced by cascading feathers that sweep along its flanks like the wings of a carrion bird. The body carries the uncanny musculature of a living horse stretched over something fundamentally wrong, with feathered plumage erupting from the neck, back, and haunches in overlapping layers of razor-edged quills and long flight feathers.

The sculpt is richly detailed throughout. The skull-face is open-mouthed, exposing broad square teeth in a fixed rictus grin, framed by long equine ear tines. The feathering is layered with genuine sculptural craft — individual quills are readable at the tip of each wing-like growth, while the mane sweeps dramatically to one side as though the creature is caught mid-stride through a spectral wind. The hooves are cloven and crow-dark, adding to the sense that this is no natural beast but something older and far more dangerous.

This bundle includes both the supported and unsupported variants of the sculpt, with options for a plain base or no base — giving you full flexibility whether you are mounting it on a custom scenic base or dropping it straight onto the table.

Well-suited to both gaming use and display collecting, the Helhest photographs beautifully in grey resin and rewards careful brushwork — the layered feathering in particular offers a wealth of opportunities for wet blending, drybrushing, and OSL effects if you want to give the creature an otherworldly glow.

  • Serves as a fearsome mount for a death knight, necromancer, or Shadowfell warlock patron encounter
  • Represents a Nightmare, death horse, or custom undead beast in any 5e or Pathfinder campaign
  • Works as a centrepiece creature in a haunted moor or graveyard encounter
  • Makes a compelling display piece for painters who enjoy layered feather and bone textures
  • Fits any campaign touching on Norse myth, Ravenloft, the Shadowfell, or the Ethereal Plane

Encounter Hook

The party has been hired to investigate a string of unexplained deaths along a remote coastal road. Each victim was found at dawn, their face locked in an expression of absolute terror, not a wound on them. On the third night, the ranger makes a Perception check — and in the fog beyond the treeline, something pale moves. It has the shape of a horse. It has the skull of something long dead. It is not running. It is watching. And when it turns its head, the druid feels their heart stutter once, hard, in their chest.
