The Grell is one of the Underdark's most unsettling predators: a floating, eyeless aberration that senses its quarry through vibration alone, then drops from the dark to paralyse and consume. This sculpt from Novaminis captures the creature mid-hunt — its grotesque lobed body hunched forward, beaked maw stretched wide, and ten long tentacles splayed outward, each lined with wicked recurved spines that threaten to seize and constrict anything within reach. The detail on the skin texture is exceptional, with the fleshy ridges of the cranial mass contrasting sharply against the ribbed, barbed limbs below. This is Pose 01 of the Novaminis Grell range, shown from multiple angles in the render images — a characterful and aggressive stance that reads powerfully on the tabletop.
Whether you're running a claustrophobic Underdark delve or stocking a forgotten dungeon with things that have no business being there, the Grell brings a genuinely unsettling presence to any encounter. It works equally well as a roaming threat, a lair guardian, or a centrepiece for the kind of horror-tinged session your players won't stop talking about. A rewarding piece to paint, too — the sculpt holds washes and drybrushing beautifully across the tentacles and cranial folds.
For adventurers who:
- Need a well-sculpted Underdark aberration for D&D 5e or other TTRPG systems
- Want a creature that doubles as a display piece and a gaming-table threat
- Are building a monster collection focused on aberrations and subterranean horrors
- Enjoy painting complex organic textures — layered skin, barbed spines, and a gaping beak
Encounter Hook:
The party has been hired to locate a missing surveying team in the tunnels beneath Deepwarden Hold. They find the camp intact — rations on the table, torches still lit — but every member of the team is gone. No blood. No drag marks. Just three sets of claw-scored circles on the cave floor above, where something clung to the rock and waited.
