Gravesmoke is the undead remnant of a ship's gunner who refuses to leave their post — or perhaps cannot. The sculpt captures the figure mid-lunge, skeletal frame partially dissolved into billowing smoke as bony hands haul a heavy cannon to bear. Long, wild hair streams behind a bandana-wrapped skull, and the expression on that bare-toothed face carries all the grim determination of someone who died angry and stayed that way. The base is a masterwork of narrative detail: a stack of iron cannonballs, splintered wooden crates, and a ship's deck board ground all combine to tell the story of a battle that never quite ended.

The sculpt works on two levels. At the gaming table, Gravesmoke makes a striking undead minion, naval encounter boss, or vengeful haunting encounter piece — especially aboard a ghost ship or in a harbour-district ghost story. Off the table, the swirling smoke form that constitutes the lower body offers a genuinely rewarding painting challenge, with plenty of opportunity to blend translucent greens, cold blues or sickly yellows into the wraithlike lower half while keeping the skeletal torso and cannon grounded in gritty nautical tones.

This miniature is multipart, allowing for easier painting before assembly and giving the sculptor room to achieve the deep undercutting that makes the smoke effect so dramatic.

Suits adventurers who enjoy:

  • Nautical and ghost ship campaign arcs — Ghost of the Saltmarsh, pirate haunting storylines
  • Undead encounter variety beyond the standard skeleton warrior
  • Miniatures that double as centrepiece painting projects with complex smoke effects
  • Naval BBEG lieutenants or recurring spectral threats for seafaring parties

Encounter Hook

The party's sloop drifts alongside the long-wrecked Ashen Meridian, searching for the shipwrecked noble's signet ring. Below decks, in the shattered gun room, every cannon has been loaded — and Gravesmoke is already crouching behind the nearest one, bony fingers on the firing lever, smoke-wraith lower body coiling through the broken hull planking. It has been waiting three decades for someone to board this ship. Initiative.
