There is something deeply unsettling about the Grave Digger — not merely the occupation, but the way he carries himself. Perched with one bony hand resting a long spear-halberd against the ground and the other extended as if beckoning, he is draped in tattered robes and a ragged fur-trimmed cloak, the wide brim of his tall hat casting a permanent shadow across a gaunt, hollow-eyed face. Long, unkempt hair spills from beneath that hat, and his skeletal fingers suggest a man who has spent far too long among the dead — or perhaps has already joined them.
The sculpt captures that liminal menace perfectly: neither fully human nor overtly monstrous, he occupies the uneasy space between the living and the undead. His pose is relaxed but watchful, the kind of stillness that suggests he has all the time in the world — because time, for him, may have stopped meaning much at all. A secondary blade is tucked at his side, hinting that this is no mere labourer but a figure of genuine threat when provoked.
For painters, the Grave Digger rewards a muted, desaturated palette — pale greys, bone whites, dried-blood browns, and a touch of mould green on the fabric folds. The generous surface area of the hat brim and robes offers room for weathering and subtle OSL from a lantern source, should you choose to add one to the base.
Well suited to adventurers who enjoy:
- Running gothic horror encounters in Ravenloft or the Shadowfell
- Adding morally ambiguous NPCs to graveyard or crypt scenes
- Portraying a Necromancer, Warlock, or dark Cleric character
- Building atmospheric display dioramas in cemetery settings
- Hunting for that one figure that genuinely unnerves players before a word is spoken
Encounter Hook: The party arrives at the village cemetery after dark to find a single lantern swinging at the gate. A gaunt figure is already there — methodically digging a grave that bears the name of a still-living member of the party. When confronted, he does not look up. He simply says: "I only dig what's been asked of me."
