The Giff are one of the most memorable species in the Spelljammer setting — hippo-headed mercenaries with an obsession for gunpowder, military rank, and getting paid on time. This captain sculpt captures that energy brilliantly. He stands with one hand on his hip and the other gripping a flintlock pistol, jaw slightly open as if mid-order or mid-threat — the line is blurry with Giff. His broad frame is wrapped in a heavy military coat, buttoned down the front and stitched at the shoulder, with a wide belt and buckled boots that wouldn't look out of place on any self-respecting officer of the Astral armada.

The sculpt rewards painters who want character over complexity — the coat folds, boot buckles, and that expressive hippo face all take contrast and wash techniques brilliantly. From the side, a short-barrelled weapon hangs at his hip alongside what appears to be a studded cudgel or club, while the back view reveals a chain detail and further weapons, giving the piece a pleasingly cluttered mercenary feel. This is Variation 01 — check our other listings if you're after a different pose or armament configuration for the same character.

A good pick for adventurers who:

• Are running a Spelljammer campaign and want tactile, characterful NPCs
• Need a hired muscle figure with real authority and presence
• Play or DM encounters involving gunpowder weapons, mercenary guilds, or astral travel
• Want a painting project with lots of surface detail and personality
• Are building a Giff warband or mercenary company for the tabletop

Encounter Hook

The party's spelljammer is boarded without warning — not by pirates, but by a Giff enforcement crew demanding unpaid docking fees from three ports ago. Their captain plants himself on the bridge, flintlock drawn and jaw set, and makes clear that the only question is whether the party pays in coin or in bruises. The Giff Captain 01 miniature is the face of that negotiation.
