This Giant Skeleton Mage is a large-scale undead powerhouse sculpted by Epic Miniatures, and every inch of it earns its place on the table. The miniature sits on a 51mm base — large creature territory — and looms accordingly, towering over standard 32mm adventurers with the menace of something that simply refuses to stay buried.
The sculpt pairs brutal physicality with arcane menace in a way that makes it genuinely versatile. In the right hand, a massive cleaver-style greataxe hangs low and ready, its wide crescent blade and riveted haft suggesting a weapon repurposed from some long-dead warlord's armoury. In the left, jagged bolts of necrotic or lightning energy arc outward from skeletal fingers — spell effects built directly into the sculpt, which means no conversion work needed to convey magical threat. A wide-brimmed conical helmet crowns the skull, giving this skeleton a surprisingly commanding silhouette — part undead general, part malevolent sorcerer.
The torso is clad in layered plate armour etched with ribcage-like detailing across the breastplate, blending the anatomy of a skeleton with the regalia of a long-dead warrior-king. Segmented pauldrons, articulated tassets, and greave plates all read clearly at tabletop distance, rewarding painters who want to push contrast between bare bone and rusted or blackened metal. A tattered cloth skirt flows behind the figure, adding movement without obscuring the fine legwork beneath. The scenic base features broken stonework and a sculpted skull, grounding the piece in a suitably grim battlefield or dungeon setting.
Both front and rear angles of the sculpt are fully detailed — the back armour plating is just as considered as the front, which matters for display pieces viewed from multiple sides.
This miniature will appeal to adventurers who:
- Need a large undead boss or elite encounter creature for their campaign
- Want a Giant Skeleton stat block upgrade with built-in arcane presence
- Are building a lich's court, a necromancer's army, or a Ravenloft encounter roster
- Enjoy painting large, heavily detailed sculpts with strong visual contrast potential
- Want a display piece that reads as imposing from across the room
Encounter Hook: The party has infiltrated the Vault of the Ashbound, seeking a stolen relic — only to find the vault's ancient guardian still on duty. As they enter the central chamber, the Giant Skeleton Mage rises from its throne of cracked flagstones, the runes on its axe igniting with sickly green fire and arcs of stolen lightning beginning to gather in its outstretched hand. The relic hangs around its neck. Retreat is already cut off.
