Experiment Alpha is the kind of miniature that stops a session cold the moment you place it on the table. Hulking, headless, and wrapped from neck to ankle in heavy chain links, this construct golem carries an unmistakable air of wrongness — something assembled rather than born, stitched together across its broad torso with crude, irregular seams that suggest improvised construction rather than careful craftsmanship. The absence of a head is not an oversight; it is a statement. Whatever animates this thing does not need to see you to find you.
The sculpt leans forward in an aggressive, wide-legged crouch, one arm reaching outward with grasping, clawed fingers while the other hangs heavy at its side. Heavy iron chains drape across the chest and wind around both arms in thick loops, half-restraint and half-armament. Segmented armour plates cover the shoulders and legs, bolted and strapped over what appear to be wrappings of aged cloth or leather binding — layers upon layers of reinforcement applied over time by whoever (or whatever) keeps this experiment going. Stubby, truncated protrusions rise from the tops of the shoulders and the neck stump, suggesting attachment points for something no longer present — or something yet to come.
The large 51mm base suits the miniature's imposing footprint, and the multipart construction means adventurers who enjoy painting complex assemblies will find plenty to work with across its heavily detailed surfaces. Whether you paint the chains as oxidised iron, the armour as scorched steel, or the binding wraps in the yellowed linen of a golem-cult's handiwork, there is texture and depth at every level.
Brings particular value for adventurers who:
- Run artificer or golem-cult storylines and want a centrepiece encounter creature
- Need a large-scale construct or iron golem proxy that reads as threatening from across the table
- Enjoy painting heavily textured, multi-material sculpts with chains, armour, and cloth
- Want a display piece that sparks immediate curiosity about what the creature actually is
- Are building out a dungeon full of arcane experiments gone catastrophically wrong
Encounter Hook
The party follows a trail of torn iron doors and crushed stone into the lower level of the artificer's keep. At the far end of a long workshop — benches overturned, arcane instruments shattered — Experiment Alpha stands motionless in the centre of the room, one arm extended toward the last door it walked through. It does not react as the party enters. It does not turn. Then one of them steps on a broken gear, and the construct's head-stub swings toward the sound with the slow, mechanical certainty of a thing that has been waiting a very long time for something to hunt.
